To preserve and promote the national sport of archery in the country the National Archery Federation of Bhutan was established in the 1970’s. When Bhutan decided to become a member of International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1983, another organization called the Bhutan Archery Federation to look after Olympic archery was also established along with four other national sports federations. It was in 1996 when former Lyonpo (Minister), Kinzang Dorji was appointed as President of the National Archery Federation of Bhutan, the two federations were merged under one organization called Bhutan Archery Federation to look after both traditional and international archery.

In 2010, the BOC decided to place archery on traditional and imported equipment under the responsibility of BIGSA and maintain just Olympic Archery under Bhutan Archery Federation.

To safeguard traditional Bhutanese games and sports from being eroded and eclipsed by other modern games and sports, in line with the vision of the Fourth King to preserve and promote the cultural identity, BIGSA was formed and recognized by BOC on 20th July 2002.

Archery and Khuru (darts) have been played by people of Bhutan for a long time, but it became more popular in the country during the reign of the Second King Druk Gyalpo Jigme Wangchuck.

Traditional or indigenous sports have been popularized in the country through conduct of various tournaments at the local, Dzongkhag (district), Regional and National levels.
